Item Agile Communication Channels for Enhancing Adoption of Extension Services(International Multidisciplinary Conference of Rongo University (IJORU), 2024-07-16) Makodiah, Johanes; Abila, James; Agalo, JerryMany governments and multi-national agencies have directed a lot of resources towards improving agricultural extension communication but without coordinated, responsive, and audience-focused agricultural extension channels, these efforts have gone to waste. The main objective of this study is to examine the agility of communication channels for enhancing the adoption of agricultural extension services. The study examined the appropriateness, and interactivity of channels; A total of 279 farmers selected from Migori and Homa Bay Counties were interviewed to share their experiences on the agility of channels used during extension services in the production of orange fleshed sweet potatoes. The study population consisted of farmers who participated in Accelerated Value Chain Development (AVCD) project which was implemented by International Potato Centre (CIP) in the two counties in 2017 and 2018. The respondents were identified using systematic random sampling. Quantitative data collection was conducted by use of mobile phone application, Kobocollect. It was established that there was channel agility in terms of venue appropriateness (49%) and the impact of training received (90%) by farmers. There was average interaction agility whereby face to face engagement recorded (48%) most of the time and (49%) half the time. Emerging channels interaction agility was observed in the use of digital platforms (mobile invitation) for meetings at (52%) and inclusion of channel interaction through demonstration was high at (61%). This implies that there is average channel appropriateness and interaction. The extension officers of government and NGOs can use this knowledge of the sensitive, flexible, iterative nature of communication channels to vary their approaches as they communicate during their extension programmes.Item Chasing international language: genesis of language curriculum in Kenya(European Centre for Research Training and Development UK, 2015-05) Agalo, Jerry; Mbai, CarolineThis paper draws attention to the cross-linguistic problems that have made minority languages lose their prominence and allow stronger languages to dominate in international linguistic space and in education.Schools and universitiescrave stronger languages for medium of instruction in the classroomin developing countries again dictates of science and technology have influenced the use of a stronger language for global use. The paper therefore investigates the states of early use of language (English) in Kenyan schools and its relationship with other vernacular languages in the country. It also identifies reasons why English became so prominent than other languages spoken in Kenya. KEYWORDS:Global Worlds, Curriculum, Society, Bootstrapping, Language, Syntactic-semantic Interface.Item Children and television: the looming media effect in Kenya(Journal of Advances in Humanities, 2014) Agalo, Jerry; Agalo, JoyceThe debate on children‟s behavior as competent television viewers and also cultural viewers today continues unabated in research. In the developed world, much of research has focused on the effects of television exposure on children‟s behavior and attitude formation. Other researches however, focused on effects on cognition. Yet the African child has been left out in such researches that continue to be conducted in developed world. Indeed, media research in Africa may not be meaningful without giving regard to „Africanity‟ among the children. This gives an open window through which one sees the peculiarities of the local culture in which African children grow as they get exposed to the media. While a number of Kenyan narratives celebrate the virtues of television including the discourses on coverage of the infamous terrorist attack in West Gate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, 21st September, 2013, it appears that the role of television in Kenyan society is catapulting into political discourses with attempts in enhancing approaches to quality governance. On the contrary, a country with a population of over 40 million people with nascent capitalist economy, there is need for enhancement of local communities and increased opportunities for education which will not lead to the hegemony of one social group and subordination of others. Of the 40 million people, 43% are children aged between five and sixteen. This paper concentrates its focus on the social milieu of the people living around the Lake Victoria region, majority of whom are mostly fishermen.Item Communication function of student governing council in the administration of public secondary schools: a case of Awendo sub-county - Kenya(IJSSIT, 2018-12) Agalo, Jerry; Ong'ondo, Charles Ochieng'; Oliech, Anne AkinyiThe role of communication function of Student Governing Councils (SGCs) in the administration of Public Secondary Schools is increasingly becoming important. Currently, the government in partnership with other stakeholders has made it mandatory for schools in Kenya to have active SGCs who should play active roles including communication between the students and the school administration. However, it is not empirically established what exact communication functions these SGCs exercise in Awendo Sub- County. It was in light with this that the researcher sought to investigation the communication functions of SGCs in the administration of public secondary school in Awendo Sub-County, Migori County, Kenya.Item Effects of social media use in participatory budgeting in county governance: a case study of Kisii county, Kenya(International Journal of Social Sciences and Information Technology, 2018) Agalo, Jerry; Kinya, Henry; Nyamari, Amos NyankangaIn Kenya, inadequate public debates on county budget priorities and choices, due to communication break down between the public and the county governments, has led to poor transparency and weak accountability. This has greatly undermined the spirit of devolution. Empirical studies indicates that, social media can be an effective platform for participatory budgeting. This study therefore set out to examine the effects of social media use in participatory budgeting in Kenya`s County governance, with a special focus on Kisii County. Study Objectives: The specific objectives of the study were to; examine the influence of social media on public participation in Kisii County Government`s budget preparation process; identify the most effective social media platforms for public participation in kisii County Government`s budget preparation process; examine how the public uses social media as a participatory platform in Kisii County Government`s budget preparation process and explore how social media is used by Kisii County government as a platform for public participation in the budget preparation process. Scope: The study set out to examine the effects of social media use in participatory budgeting in County governance, with a special focus on Kisii County. The choice of Kisii County was based on the fact that it is among the Counties hardest hit by public apathy in the budget preparation process, due to communication break down between the County Government and the citizenry since 2013. Bonchari Sub- County, which is one of the Sub-counties constituting Kisii County, was purposively selected as the sampling area, based on the intensity of community protests against implementation of the county government programmes, viewed incompatible with public priorities or choices. Findings: Among the study findings is that social media platforms, especially Facebook and WhatsApp are popular among the citizens and thus effective for participatory budgeting. Unfortunately, their use by Kisii County government as participatory platforms in the budget preparation process is limited and sporadic. The results of the study will be significant to Governments and their budgeting stakeholders in determining the best ways of social media use for participatory budgeting. The study finally recommends that Kisii County government should be proactive in the use of social media technologies for effective e-participatory budgeting.Item Functional Heads in the Dholuo Determiner Phrase(Journal of Advances in Linguistics, 2019-09-30) Agalo, Jerry; Midigoa, Jackton OtienoThis paper focuses on functional heads existing in a Dholuo DP. The notion of functional heads in the extended Projection of the CP (Complementizer Phrase) has led to a new approach in the analysis of projections in syntactic theory. The objective was to identify the functional elements in the Dholuo DP, analyze the functional elements and explain their occurrence. The study used Government and Binding theory which enables us to analyze the functional heads. The study also used descriptive research design to analyze collected data. The data was collected from 40 informants aged 35 years to 50 years; which was a sample from population of Dholuo speakers living in Homa Bay County around Lake Victoria. Data collected had sentences with Dholuo DPs. The study found eleven elements commonly occurring in Dholuo DP. These elements form the structure of Dholuo DP and can be categorized as lexical and functional heads. The lexical elements identified in the Dholuo DPs are: Nouns, Adjectives, prepositional phrases and genitive phrases. The functional elements identified included: Pronouns, article affixes, demonstratives, possessives, quantifiers, numerals, and relative clauses. In Dholuo, genitive phrases have prepositions acting as possessives. Relative clauses on the other hand, contain relative word, verb, pronoun, preposition and demonstratives.Item Organizational communication on devolved governance: a case of Kisii county executive(International Journal of Social Sciences and Information Technology, 2018-11) Nyambeki, Diana Okemwa; Agalo, Jerry; Kinya, HenryDevolution being a new phenomenon in Kenya, the capacity of the counties to face up with communication challenges and potential structural complexities to ensure that they are managed sustainably is a concern. We can recover it from a more disciplined approach when we begin to seek the ultimate causation of the need for peace. As such peace will often remain a political hot potato; it is a factor, though neglected in the Kenyan education system, of major educational importance and often demands careful, sensitive and intelligent approach. We must perceive it as a lifelong process which starts in the family, continues at school and must be practiced thereafter in our professions and way of life. In this way all people should become ‘conflict literate,’ thus aware of what may cause conflict and its negative consequences that often times poses a formidable threat to the social fabric and sanctity of the society.Item Perceptions of youth on new media influence in insecurity in Migori county, Kenya: a case of Rongo Sub County(International Journal of Social Sciences and Information Technology, 2019-10) Agalo, Jerry; Kinya, Henry; Nyang’wecha, Kennedy OnyangoToday, new media fully saturate our everyday lives that we are often unconscious of their presence, not to mention their influence.
